Birding at Wertheim NWR: Featuring a Red-Tailed Hawk (10/1/21)

We birded in three areas of the refuge. We spent little time near the visitor’s center and only saw blue jay and red-bellied woodpecker. Many good birds were seen of the observation platform. These birds included an immature bald eagle, an immature red-tailed hawk, eastern phoebe, many double-crested cormorants, great egret, mallard, and ring-billed gull. Along the White Oak Trail, we saw belted kingfisher, two hooded mergansers, eastern bluebird, eastern towhee (female), American goldfinch, swamp sparrow, song sparrow, and downy woodpecker.
