Birding at Wertheim NWR: Featuring a Baltimore Oriole (6/28/21)

This was our first visit to Wertheim NWR on the south shore of Long Island. We didn’t see much by the visitor’s center but we heard a red-eyed vireo. At the first observation deck, we saw a family of six mute swans—two adults and four cygnets (immatures). Most of our trip was along the White Oak Trail where some of the birds we identified included house wren, black-capped chickadee, eastern phoebe, eastern bluebird, Baltimore oriole, common yellowthroat, yellow warbler, ovenbird, blue-gray gnatcatcher, great-crested flycatcher, and Canada goose. We heard a great blue heron but didn’t see it.
