Birding at Prime Hook NWR: Featuring Turkey Vultures (6/25/21)

Birding at Prime Hook NWR: Featuring Turkey Vultures (6/25/21)

We started out from the Visitor’s Center. Plenty of purple martins were in and around their apartments as usual. Other birds identified here included orchard oriole, barn swallow, red-winged blackbird, and mourning dove. Next, we moved on to the Dike Trail where we identified 32 species, among them, turkey vultures. Yes, turkey vultures! Not normally what I photograph, but this trio was sunning themselves in unison and it looked like it would make a good photo. Other birds identified along the trail included common yellowthroat, northern flicker, osprey, bald eagle (adult), mallard, great blue heron, black skimmer, Forster’s tern, eastern kingbird, house wren, house finch, and laughing gull. Our last trail was the Boardwalk Trail. Some of the birds we saw here included bald eagle (2 imms.), northern cardinal, chipping sparrow, Carolina wren, snowy egret, blue grosbeak, eastern bluebird, and osprey.
