We birded in four areas of the refuge. Birds identified near the visitor’s center included snow geese (flock overhead), white-throated sparrow, house finch, and Carolina wren. Some of the birds we identified along the Dike Trail were Canada Goose, Carolina chickadee, mallard (pair), green-winged teal, greater yellowlegs, sanderling, dunlin, American oystercatcher (2 in the distant water towards Prime Hook Road), and tufted titmouse. Along the Boardwalk Trail, we identified American black duck, northern flicker, swamp sparrow, northern harrier, great blue heron, gadwall, and bald eagle. No birds were in Fleetwood Pond but nearby we identified Carolina wren, Carolina chickadee, turkey vulture, and yellow-rumped warbler.
