Birding at Prime Hook NWR: Featuring an Orchard Oriole (6/7/25)

We went on an open-to-the-public Saturday morning bird walk led by members of the Sussex Bird Club. Three areas were covered today. We started in the parking lot by the old Visitor’s Center. We didn’t stay there long and only identified purple martin, orchard oriole, and chipping sparrow. Next, we went along the boardwalk. Birds we identified along this trail included bald eagle, eastern kingbird, green heron, indigo bunting, great-crested flycatcher, eastern towhee, orchard oriole, Carolina wren, eastern wood-pewee, laughing gull, mallard, northern rough-winged swallow, common yellowthroat, gray catbird, and laughing gull. We finished by walking along the Dike Trail where some of the birds we saw were black skimmer northern flicker (adult with juvenile in a dead tree hole), herring gull, barn swallow, cedar waxwing, great blue heron, great egret, snowy egret, eastern kingbird, tree swallow, osprey, Forster’s tern, green heron, orchard oriole, northern mockingbird, and red-winged blackbird.
