We went on an open-to-the-public Saturday morning bird walk led by members of the Sussex Bird Club. Three areas were covered today. We started in the parking lot by the old Visitor’s Center. Some of the birds we identified there were purple martin, laughing gull, orchard oriole, blue grosbeak, common yellowthroat, and gray catbird. The Boardwalk Trail was the next stop. Birds we saw there included northern cardinal, blue-gray gnatcatcher, snowy egret (flock), bald eagle, European starling, great-crested flycatcher, bald eagle, indigo bunting, eastern wood-peewee, lesser yellowlegs, common yellowthroat, eastern kingbird, downy woodpecker, dunlin, osprey, black vulture, greater yellowlegs, Virginia rail, and semipalmated sandpiper. We finished up along the Dike Trail. Birds we saw along this trail included bald eagle, osprey, mallard (pair), Canada goose, orchard oriole, common yellowthroat, black vulture, green heron, Forster’s tern, black skimmer, tree swallow, song sparrow, laughing gull, black-bellied plover, great blue heron, and brown-headed cowbird.
