Birding at Prime Hook NWR: Featuring an Indigo Bunting (6/11/25)

We went birding with other members of the Sussex Bird Club. During the short time at the Old Visitor’s Center we saw purple martin, American robin, and mourning dove. The Boardwalk trail was very productive as we picked up 32 species there. Some of the birds that we identified there included common yellowthroat, blue grosbeak, indigo bunting, field sparrow, eastern kingbird, northern flicker, Virginia rail, snowy egret, eastern kingbird, yellow-breasted chat, pileated woodpecker, white-eyed vireo, yellow-billed cuckoo, osprey, great-crested flycatcher, eastern towhee, green heron, double-crested cormorant, and laughing gull. Our last trail was along the Dike Trail. Some of the birds we saw there were least tern, tree swallow, osprey (carrying nesting material), semipalmated sandpiper, chipping sparrow, red-winged blackbird, great blue heron, Forster’s tern, willet, black vulture, barn swallow, laughing gull, orchard oriole, and mallard.
