Birding at Prime Hook NWR: Featuring an Eastern Phoebe (10/5/24)

Some of the birds we identified at the Visitor’s Center were northern flicker, downy woodpecker, blue jay, and American robin. Birds identified along the Boardwalk Trail included brown thrasher, eastern phoebe, great blue heron, red-winged blackbird, gray catbird, Carolina wren, Canada goose, and northern cardinal. We took the Dike Trail next which was a little foggy by the water. Birds that we saw along this trail included mallard, great egret, great blue heron, Caspian tern, Forster’s tern, bald eagle, Cooper’s hawk, laughing gull, greater yellowlegs, Canada goose, and double-crested cormorant. The last area we covered was Fleetwood Pond. Water levels were very low because of the drought but we identified 15 species here including bald eagle, belted kingfisher, osprey, pileated woodpecker, blue-winged teal (3), snowy egret, and great blue heron.
