Birding at Prime Hook NWR – Featuring a Yellow-Breasted Chat (6/3/23)

We went on an open-to-the-public Saturday morning birdwalk led by members of the Sussex Bird Club. After parking at the Visitor’s Center, some of the birds we saw included purple martin, American robin, great blue heron, cedar waxwing, mourning dove, and double-crested cormorant (flock). We next walked the Boardwalk Trail including a short loop around the cemetery. Some of the birds we saw along this trail were gray catbird, yellow-billed cuckoo, yellow-breasted chat, common yellowthroat, great blue heron, great egret, barn swallow, osprey, bald eagle (imm.), eastern kingbird, indigo bunting, ruby-throated hummingbird, orchard oriole, and great-crested flycatcher. We finished up with the Dike Trail. Birds that we saw along this trail included Forster’s tern, semipalmated sandpiper, black skimmer, American avocet, osprey, tree swallow, song sparrow, laughing gull, royal tern, Canada goose, bald eagle (imm.), eastern kingbird, great blue heron, mallard, and great egret.
