I covered three areas of the refuge with two other members of the Sussex Bird Club. Some of the birds identified near the Visitor’s Center were great-crested flycatcher, northern flicker, osprey, European starling, and northern mockingbird. Our next walk was along the Boardwalk Trail. Birds identified along this trail included hairy woodpecker, eastern towhee, great blue heron, bald eagle, tree swallow, snowy egret, greater yellowlegs, American goldfinch, American black duck, and red-shouldered hawk. We finished along the Dike Trail. Some of the birds we identified here were belted kingfisher, great blue heron, laughing gull, Caspian tern, least tern, bald eagle, turkey vulture, double-crested cormorant, great egret, snowy egret, blue grosbeak, Forster’s tern, Carolina wren, and Canada goose.
