Birding at Prime Hook NWR: Featuring a Snowy Egret (4/29/22)

We birded along four trails this morning. In less than two hours, we identified 32 species. Our first stop was in the Visitor’s Center area where we identified purple martin, brown-headed cowbird, chipping sparrow, mourning dove, and red-bellied woodpecker. Some of the birds identified along the Boardwalk Trail included northern cardinal, common yellowthroat, double-crested cormorant (a few flocks flying high), gray catbird, house wren, bald eagle, greater yellowlegs, red-bellied woodpecker, and American robin. The next trail was a loop along Blue Goose Trail to Foord’s Landing Road to the Entrance Road to the Visitor’s Center. Birds identified here included American goldfinch, Savannah sparrow, American robin, tree swallow, laughing gull, osprey, white-throated sparrow, and bald eagle. Our trip along the Dike Trail was a short one but some of the birds we identified were great blue heron, red-eyed vireo, snowy egret, Forster’s tern, Carolina wren, and laughing gull.
