This morning’s walk in the refuge started out at the Visitor’s Center. The purple martin colony was very busy as usual. We also identified tree swallows, chipping and field sparrows, red-winged blackbirds, and a black vulture. We picked up 36 species along the Dike Trail. Among them were snowy egret, common yellowthroat, two adult bald eagles, laughing gull, mallard, green heron, eastern kingbird, osprey, large flocks of dunlins, blue-winged teal, Forster’s tern, clapper rail (heard only), lesser and greater yellowlegs, marsh wren, and yellow-rumped warbler. Our final stop was along the Boardwalk Trail. Birds along this trail included brown-headed cowbird, lesser yellowlegs, two black-necked stilts, green-winged teal, white-throated sparrow, orchard oriole, northern harrier, and red-bellied woodpecker.
