Birding at Prime Hook NWR – Featuring a Semipalmated Plover (8/26/23)

We decided to do a late afternoon birdwalk at Prime Hook NWR. The Visitor’s Center was lacking many birds. All we saw there were mourning dove, northern mockingbird, and European starling (flocks). There were no purple martins by the apartments, apparently having migrated south. We walked the Dike Trail next. Birds we identified included osprey, laughing gull, herring gull, semipalmated plover, semipalmated sandpiper, eastern kingbird, short-billed dowitcher, Forster’s tern, Caspian Tern, royal tern, snowy egret, barn swallow, black vulture, greater yellowlegs, Carolina wren, and red-bellied woodpecker.
