I went on a birdwalk with the Sussex Bird Club to Prime Hook NWR. There were 14 members of the group attending the trip. While people were arriving, I checked out the birds in the parking lot by the Visitor’s Center. Some of these birds were purple martin, indigo bunting, laughing gull, house wren, common yellowthroat, and fish crow. The birdwalk started along the Boardwalk Trail, including a side trail around the cemetery. Some of the birds we identified here included northern flicker, mourning dove, downy woodpecker, greater yellowlegs, least tern, great blue heron, orchard oriole, American robin, and a glossy ibis flying with two great egrets. We went to the Dike Trail next and picked up 29 species. Birds seen along the trail included willet, mallard, least tern, black skimmer (about 20), short-billed dowitcher, royal tern, eastern wood-peewee, osprey, orchard oriole, herring gull, Carolina chickadee, snowy egret, semipalmated sandpiper, semipalmated plover, Forster’s tern, least tern, barn swallow, tree swallow, Canada goose (2), northern cardinal, and northern mockingbird.
