We went on an open-to-the-public First Saturday morning birdwalk led by members of the Sussex Bird Club. We took two trails starting with the Boardwalk Trail. Birds we saw along this trail included bald eagle, osprey, belted kingfisher, semipalmated plover, lesser yellowlegs, greater yellowlegs, white-eyed vireo, great blue heron, yellow-billed cuckoo, white ibis, eastern wood-pewee, laughing gull, and semipalmated plover. A flock of about 12 teal briefly flew by, mostly consisting of blue-winged teal with lesser numbers of green-winged teal. The second trail we took was the Dike Trail. Birds we identified along this trail included black skimmer, Caspian tern, Forster’s tern, osprey, black vulture, snowy egret, double-crested cormorant, American herring gull, red-winged blackbird, semipalmated plover, laughing gull, and Carolina chickadee.
