Birding at Merritt Island NWR: Featuring a Reddish Egret (1/27/25)

For the first part of our trip to Merritt Island NWR today, we drove around Black Point Wildlife Drive. We stayed on this loop and also took the trail to the observation deck located behind the bathrooms. Some of the birds we saw today were Wilson’s snipe, tricolored heron, little blue heron, great egret, reddish egret, black skimmer, white ibis, northern shoveler, glossy ibis, killdeer, green heron, blue-winged teal, pied-billed grebe, black vulture, roseate spoonbill, American anhinga, belted kingfisher, wood stork, common gallinule, American coot, lesser scaup, American wigeon, ring-billed gull, Forster’s tern, American avocet, and hooded merganser, and tree swallow. On the way out of the refuge, we heard yellow-rumped warbler, blue jay, and northern flicker.
