Our first birding trip to Massachusetts started at Gooseberry Island in Westport. Gooseberry Island is actually a narrow peninsula connected by a narrower causeway. We walked the trail from the parking lot to the World War II observation towers. It was a cloudy morning but we managed to see 20 species. Some of the birds we saw included song sparrow, eastern towhee, yellow warbler, herring gull, American goldfinch, black scoter (group), common eider (group), osprey, mallard, common yellowthroat, killdeer, great black-backed gull, and red-winged blackbird.
