Birding at Fowler Beach – Featuring a Sanderling (1/6/23)

I went on an afternoon birdwalk with the Sussex Bird Club to Fowler Beach. In the area around the parking lot, we saw flocks of snow geese overhead, an immature bald eagle, American black duck, ruddy duck, and tundra swan. We walked to the beach and saw groups of snow buntings and horned larks on the beach and red-winged blackbirds flying by along with another immature bald eagle. In the water and along the shore, we saw ring-billed gull, surf scoter, red-throated loon, great black-backed gull, sanderling, dunlin, and double-crested cormorant. The sun was starting to set and we walked back to the parking lot. We saw both male and female northern harriers over the field. Finally at 4:33 PM, we spotted our first short-eared owl hunting over the field. We saw another one not too much later but it may have been the same one or a different one.
