I went on a field trip with the Sussex Bird Club. There were about 25 of us in the group. Our first stop was the south side of the Indian River Inlet. It was near high tide so there weren’t many birds in the inlet itself but more towards the beach and open water. The highlight was seeing a razorbill. Other birds seen included herring gull, sanderling, dunlin, long-tailed duck, great blue heron, surf scoter, red-throated loon, and great black-backed gull. Next, we stopped at Burton Island. At least two black-crowned night herons were in the tree behind the building near the parking lot. Other birds that we found included horned grebe, common loon, yellow-rumped warbler, great blue heron, red-breasted merganser, brant, Carolina chickadee, song sparrow, and downy woodpecker.
