Birding at Delaware Seashore State Park: Featuring a Herring Gull (1/5/24)

Our first stop was at the Indian River Inlet. The tide was low and the jetties were exposed as much as possible. Birds we saw on the jetties included sanderling, purple sandpiper, ruddy turnstone, herring gull, and ring-billed gull. Great cormorants were resting on the tower. Other birds swimming or flying included common loon, Bonaparte’s gull, and double-crested cormorant. Great black-back gulls were on the beach. Our second stop was Burton Island. We walked from the parking lot and across the bridge up to the first boardwalk. Birds swimming were buffleheads (perhaps 20), red-breasted merganser, pied-billed grebe, and ring-billed gull. One black-crowned night heron was in a tree by the building parking lot. We also saw a great blue heron, tricolored heron, and green heron.
