Birding at Delaware Seashore State Park – Featuring a Great Blue Heron (11/29/22)

Our first stop was at the Indian River Inlet. The tide was about halfway between low and high and was coming in. We saw a flock of about 20 Bonaparte’s gulls in the inlet on the west side of the bridge. Other birds seen in the inlet and off the beach included white-winged scoter, black scoter, common loon, northern gannet, brant, bufflehead, long-tailed duck, and brown pelican. We went to Burton Island next. The highlight was six black-crowned night herons in the trees overlooking the water on the north side of the causeway near the parking lot. Other birds seen during this part of the trip included bufflehead, swamp sparrow, common loon, yellow-rumped warbler, Carolina chickadee, downy woodpecker, red-breasted nuthatch, American robin, great blue heron, and black vulture.
