This was our first visit to Connetquot River State Park on the south shore of Long Island. There was a good variety of birds seen from the parking lot and nature center areas up to the small bridge that crossed the river. Some of the birds we identified included Canada goose, chimney swift, yellow warbler, Baltimore oriole (female), black-capped chickadee, American goldfinch, and red-winged blackbird. We crossed the small bridge next and took the Red Trail up to the fish hatchery before looping around and taking the Red/White Tail back to the parking lot. We identified 19 species of birds along this route including eastern kingbird, eastern towhee, tree swallow, osprey, ovenbird, blue jay, barn swallow, and pileated woodpecker. We also saw a family of nine mute swans—two adults and seven cygnets (immatures).
