We took three trails today, starting with Beach Road. As we went towards the beach, we turned onto the Woodland Trail and birded that trail before heading the rest of the way on Beach Road. Some of the birds we identified along Beach Road were great egret, belted kingfisher, tricolored heron, Forster’s tern, bald eagle, Carolina wren, and downy woodpecker. The Woodland Trail was productive with 24 species. Mosquito repellent was very helpful. Birds we identified along this trail included Cape May warbler, pine warbler, northern parula, European starling, red-breasted nuthatch, brown-headed nuthatch, and northern cardinal. From the Pony Overlook, we saw white ibis, great egret, snowy egret, and little blue heron (immature). We only saw double-crested cormorant from the end of the Bivalve Trail. In Little Tom’s Cove, some of the birds we saw were piping plover (one), willet, royal tern, Caspian tern, and American oystercatcher (group).
