Birding at Cape Henlopen State Park – Featuring Ospreys (6/10/23)

We covered three areas of the park this morning. First, we went to The Point area below the parking lot. The tide was low and there were hundreds of laughing gulls on the mudflats. Some of the other birds we saw there were semipalmated sandpiper, osprey, willet, ruddy turnstone, brown pelican, barn swallow, double-crested cormorant, great black-backed gull, Forster’s tern, and brown thrasher. We took the Seaside Nature Trail to the beach after that. Birds we identified along this trail included pine warbler, great-crested flycatcher, eastern wood-peewee, blue jay, house wren, blue grosbeak, brown-headed cowbird, and cedar waxwing. We finished along the fishing pier. Beyond the end of the pier on some old pilings was an osprey nest. We saw on adult and three juvenile ospreys in the nest. Also seen along the pier was laughing gull, common grackle, Forster’s tern, Caspian tern, common tern, and rock pigeon.
