We birded this morning in two areas of Cape Henlopen State Park. Our first stop was the area near The Point on the bayside. It was low tide and many sandbars were exposed. We saw two American oystercatchers. One had orange bands with the symbols “YL7” on each leg. We saw at least one piping plover within the protected area. Some other birds seen here included black-bellied plover, osprey, common loon, red-throated loon, laughing gull, snowy egret, Forster’s tern, greater yellowlegs, and double-crested cormorant. A field sparrow was singing in a tree near the parking lot. Our second stop was the loop around the Seaside Nature Trail. This trail was more productive than usual as we saw 26 species. Some of the birds we identified included blue-gray gnatcatcher, purple martin, semipalmated plover, eastern towhee, blue jay, pine warbler, tree swallow, American robin, white-throated sparrow, northern cardinal, and laughing gull.
