We birded in two areas of the park. The first area was along the north side of Gordon’s Pond Trail. The highlight bird was an American bittern seen on the inland side of the trail near a wooden platform that jutted out into the water. We watched it for a while as it mostly stayed in the tall grass. Other birds identified along the trail were brown-headed nuthatch, great blue heron, yellow-rumped warbler, pine warbler, bald eagle (ad.), greater yellowlegs, American black duck, great black-backed gull, northern cardinal, Carolina wren, and ring-billed gull. Next, we went to Herring Point and stayed in the top area overlooking the ocean. The lark sparrow was still there as it has been for several months. We also saw osprey (2), dark-eyed junco, red-throated loon, surf scoter, song sparrow, northern mockingbird, and song sparrow.
