Birding at Cape Henlopen State Park: Featuring a Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker (10/7/22)

On this great weather day, we venture to Cape Henlopen State Park. The first stop was along Gordon’s Pond Trail (North side) where we identified 36 species. There was a lot of activity in the trees bordering the parking lot including red-breasted nuthatch, yellow-billed cuckoo, red-eyed vireo, golden-crowned kinglet, and ruby-crowned kinglet. Some other birds we identified along the trail were yellow-bellied sapsucker, brown thrasher, hairy woodpecker, pine warbler, pied-billed grebe, double-crested cormorant, bald eagle, yellow-rumped warbler, blue jay, great egret, laughing gull, Savannah sparrow, and black-bellied plover. We finished at the Fishing Pier where we identified 12 species including osprey, brown pelican, bald eagle, royal tern, herring gull, Forster’s tern, and great blue heron.
