We went on a field trip with the Sussex County Bird Club. Most of the trip was spent along the south side of the Gordon’s Pond Trail. Water levels in the pond were very low. Some of the birds we identified were pine warbler, snowy egret, bald eagle, great blue heron, laughing gull, lesser yellowlegs, greater yellowlegs, Bonaparte’s gull, Canada goose, dunlin, Carolina wren, osprey, brown-headed nuthatch, white-breasted nuthatch, killdeer, blue-winged teal, blue-gray gnatcatcher, and yellow-rumped warbler. Dunlins were the dominant species in the water. After finishing up on the trail, we walked to the beach. Birds identified there included surf scoter, black scoter, common loon, double-crested cormorant, lesser black-backed gull, and American oystercatcher (2 on the rocks to the south of us).
