Birding at Cape Henlopen State Park: Featuring Snow Buntings (12/30/20)

We walked the two-mile loop around “The Point” at Cape Henlopen State Park. The tide was low which was a good time to go here. The full loop is only open from about October to the end of February due to the nesting of endangered bird species. The highlight of the day was a flock of about 30 snow buntings that landed on the beach and in the shallow tidal areas near the old shipwreck remains on the bayside. There were plenty of herring, ring-billed, and great black-backed gulls flying around along with the ubiquitous double-crested cormorants over the water. The walk around The Point took two hours and 15 minutes.
