We birded in three areas of Cape Henlopen State Park. Our first stop was The Point area near the parking lot. Some of the birds we saw on the bay side included osprey, common merganser, great blue heron, and double-crested cormorant. On the ocean side, we saw eastern bluebird, pine warbler, red-throated loon, and northern gannet, among others. Next, we took the Seaside Nature Trail through the woods and to the bay. The highlight was seeing two piping plovers among a group of sanderlings on the beach. Some other birds seen along the trail were white-throated sparrow, northern cardinal, American robin, brown-headed cowbird, yellow-rumped warbler, herring gull, bufflehead, red-breasted merganser, osprey, and great black-backed gull. From the Fishing Pier, we saw an immature bald eagle, bufflehead, ring-billed gull, red-breasted merganser, and double-crested cormorant, among others.
