Birding at Cape Henlopen State Park: Featuring a Pine Warbler (3/20/21)

On this first day of spring, we birded with members of the Sussex Bird Club. We birded in several areas of the park. From the fishing pier parking lot, we identified American robin, northern cardinal, and a flying killdeer. Herring Point was dull and we only saw double-crested cormorant, herring gull, and ring-billed gull. However, the short part of the north Gordon’s Pond Trail by the large parking lot was active with eastern bluebirds, pine warblers, dark-eyed juncos, and brown-headed cowbirds. From the Hawk Watch area, we saw turkey vulture, eastern bluebird, downy woodpecker, house finch, yellow-rumped warbler, and red-throated loon. From the bottom of the beach trail at The Point, we saw one piping plover, one American oystercatcher, two adult bald eagles on a platform near the lighthouse, one osprey, surf scoters, and red-breasted mergansers. We next went to the fishing pier and saw bufflehead, great black-backed gull, horned grebe, red-breasted mergansers, and double-crested cormorant. We walked only on a short part of the Seaside Nature Trail and identified by sound Carolina chickadee, yellow-rumped warbler, Carolina wren, and northern cardinal.
