We went on a field trip with the Sussex Bird Club to Cape Henlopen State Park. Our intent was to walk the northern part of Gordon’s Pond Trail but, unfortunately, it was closed due to maintenance. Instead, we walked along the Walking Dunes Trail to the Salt Marsh Trail and back along the road to the parking lot. Some of the birds we identified included peregrine falcon, many white ibises in the marsh, American redstart, red-breasted nuthatch, great blue heron, blue jay, blue grosbeak, sedge wren, pine warbler, mourning dove, and gray catbird. We next birded on top of Herring Point where we saw osprey, double-crested cormorant, brown pelican, great black-backed gull, black vulture, northern flicker, and an immature bald eagle.
