Birding at Cape Henlopen State Park: Featuring a Carolina Chickadee (1/11/21)

The morning started out a cold 26° but it was sunny and there was no wind. We birded in two areas. First, we walked around the Seaside Nature Trail. The highlight was seeing a very rare Townsend’s Solitaire (rare in the eastern U.S.). It had been reported about the past week in the area near the bunker and that’s where we found it. I was only able to get one picture of it and you can see the bird’s distinctive eye-ring. Other birds seen along the trail included a red-breasted nuthatch, Carolina chickadees, northern mockingbird, six red-breasted mergansers, herring gulls, and three bald eagles on the shore of The Point (two adults and one immature). Herring Point was the second area we went to, Birds seen there included a red-throated loon, surf sscoter, song sparrow, and a large flock of snow geese overhead.
