There were seven areas of the refuge that we covered today. Birds identified from the Visitor’s Center included purple martin, northern bobwhite, bald eagle, and eastern wood-peewee. We went to the Raymond Pool Trail and Observation Tower next. Some of the birds we identified there were yellow warbler, eastern towhee, white-eyed vireo, red-eyed vireo, willet, greater yellowlegs, American avocet, semipalmated sandpiper, laughing gull, great egret, and snowy egret. Birds identified by Raymond Pool included black-necked stilt, common yellowthroat, American avocet, killdeer, willet, clapper rail, osprey, dunlin, gray catbird, marsh wren, and brown-headed cowbird. Birds in Shearness Pool included bald eagle, marsh wren, clapper rail, black-necked stilt, tree swallow, mute swan, black swan (swimming in the back with mute swans), great blue heron, mallard, Canada goose, and red-winged blackbird. Bear Swamp Pool was reopened since the last time we were here in April. Some of the birds we saw here included mallard, willet, osprey, barn swallow, mute swan, American goldfinch, Canada goose, and great-crested flycatcher. Our next stop was Pasture Point Pond, newly renamed from Beaver Pond. Some of the birds we identified here were American goldfinch, common yellowthroat, wood thrush, barn swallow, green heron, tree swallow, and red-eyed vireo. Birds identified at Finis Pond included red-eyed vireo, ovenbird, house wren, yellow warbler, wild turkey (on the road), wood thrush, and American robin.
