After birding by the parking lot near the Historic District, we went down to what was left of the lake. Two months earlier, heavy rains caused the dam to break and most of the lake was drained. However, there were some pools of water and the mud flats also attracted some birds. After viewing the lake, we walked back up through the woods and to the field. Some of the birds we identified were great blue heron, great egret, osprey, yellow-rumped warbler, palm warbler, hermit thrush, white-breasted nuthatch, mute swan, Canada goose, belted kingfisher, dark-eyed junco, eastern towhee, mallard, downy woodpecker, American robin, and double-crested cormorant.
