Birding at Assawoman Wildlife Area: Featuring Mute Swans (12/10/24)

I went on a field trip with the Sussex Bird Club to Assawoman Wildlife Area. A few turkey vultures were seen in the main, gravel parling lot area before we moved on to the tower on Mulberry Landing Road. We saw several species of waterfowl on Mulberry Pond and 65-Acre Pond including hooded merganser, mute swan, tundra swan, American black duck, blue-winged teal, American wigeon, and northern shoveler. Mulberry Landing was the next stop and we looked at Mulberry Pond from the opposite side. From there, we added gadwall, bufflehead, yellow-rumped warbler, northern flicker, and tufted titmouse. Our final area was a walk down Strawberry Landing Road up to 65-Acre Pond. The glare of the sun was too strong to identify most of the waterfowl on the pond. Along this walk, we identified Carolina wren, Carolina chickadee, greater yellowlegs, great blue heron, brown-headed nuthatch, belted kingfisher, and winter wren.
