Birding at Assawoman State Wildlife Area: Featuring a Great Blue Heron (3/27/21)

We birded in four main areas. Our first stop was at Sassafras Landing and some of the birds we identified included pine warbler, bald eagle, great blue heron, laughing gull, and pileated woodpecker. We went to Strawberry Landing from there and saw, among others, Canada goose, fish crow, great blue heron, northern flicker, and double-crested cormorant. Next, we went to the area by the observation tower. We did not climb it since we got food views from the ground. Birds we saw in this area included American black duck, two mute swans, gadwall, northern pintail, and mallard. Our final stop was at Mulberry Landing. We saw many of the same waterfowl on the pond as we did from the observation tower but from a different and wider angle. Some of the bird we saw in this area included ring-necked duck, American wigeon, blue-winged and green-winged teal, laughing gull, osprey, black vulture, Forster’s tern, and greater yellowlegs.
