I went this morning on a guided birdwalk led by one of the Delaware Nature Society’s trip leaders. There were about 20 people in the group including several members of the Sussex Bird Club. We first walked near the Nature Center and along the boardwalk behind it and identified barn swallow, eastern bluebird, red-eyed vireo, great-crested flycatcher, eastern wood-peewee, Carolina wren, and gray catbird, among other species. Next, we crossed the road and on Abbott’s Pond we saw two Canada geese and a pied-billed grebe. Some of the birds we identified through the woods and fields were white-eyed vireo, eastern kingbird, pileated woodpecker, red-shouldered hawk, eastern towhee, yellow-rumped warbler, chipping sparrow, and house sparrow. Most of the trees were full of leaves now which made it difficult to take photographs of the birds. About one-third of the birds were identified by sound and were not seen.
