Birding at Cape Henlopen State Park: Featuring a Great Blue Heron (1/27/21)

It was a cold, cloudy, breezy afternoon as we walked along the north part of Gordon’s Pond Trail. It was difficult to take good pictures in the dim light but I managed to set some. In spite of the poor light, we were able to identify several waterfowl species with our spotting scope. We saw in the water American black ducks, great blue herons, northern pintails, over 100 northern shovelers, buffleheads, mallards, and gadwalls. Flying over the marsh was a northern harrier and an adult bald eagle. Elsewhere along the trail were turkey vultures, yellow-rumped warblers, and a Carolina chickadee. That’s all 12 species we found. It was getting too cold and windy to stay longer.
