Birding at Cape Henlopen State Park: Featuring a Red-Breasted Merganser (1/21/21)

We went to Cape Henlopen State Park this afternoon. First, we birded from the fishing pier and saw two adult bald eagles, one flying inland and one having a meal on the rock jetty by the lighthouse. Closer to us were ring-billed, great black-backed and herring gulls; double-crested cormorants; buffleheads; and a male red-breasted merganser. Several turkey vultures were flying high overhead. The second area we birded was along the Seaside Nature Trail. We saw the Townsend’s Solitaire again by the bunker between markers 4 and 5, the same area we saw him last time. A tufted titmouse was in this spot as well. We saw a common loon near the far shore and many of the same birds on the pilings that we saw from the fishing pier.
