Birding at Chincoteague NWR: Featuring a Northern Bobwhite (9/11/25)

We started out along Beach Road but we didn’t spend a lot of time there. We identified only snowy egret, greater yellowlegs, great egret, and double-crested cormorant. Next, we walked along Woodland Trail up to the pony observation deck. Some of the birds we identified there were bald eagle, gray catbird, eastern wood-pewee, white ibis, tricolored heron, Carolina wren, black vulture, and great egret. Little Tom’s Cove was as productive as yesterday. Birds we saw included laughing gull, American herring gull, black-bellied plover, black skimmer, American oystercatcher (several were banded), willet, Forster’s tern, common tern, piping plover, royal tern, lesser black-backed gull, and great black-backed gull. We took the Causeway Trail next from the Wildlife Loop parking lot to the causeway where we identified black-and-white warbler, brown-headed nuthatch, Forster’s tern, and northern cardinal, among others. Our last stop was along Wildlife Loop. We watched a northern bobwhite for about 15 minutes on the side of the road near where the Black Duck Trail comes in. Other birds seen along this trail included turkey vulture, white ibis, great egret, pied-billed grebe, eastern phoebe, and mourning dove.
