Birding at Bombay Hook NWR: Featuring an Eastern Kingbird (8/3/25)

We covered five areas of the refuge. We didn’t stay long at the Visitor’s Center but we identified house sparrow, purple martin, field sparrow, Our next stop was Raymond Pool. Birds that we identified here included American avocet (perhaps 75), great egret, marsh wren, short-billed dowitcher, osprey, clapper rail, tree swallow, laughing gull, tricolored heron, eastern kingbird, semipalmated plover, semipalmated sandpiper, and snowy egret. Next, we went to Shearness Pool. Birds we saw there included Canada goose, green heron, great blue heron, mute swan, black swan (one mixed in with the mute swans), mallard, Forster’s tern, bald eagle, double-crested cormorant, and short-billed dowitcher. Some of the birds seen in Pasture Point Pond were eastern kingbird, gray catbird, purple martin, and great blue heron. Our last stop was Bear Swamp Pool. Birds we identified there included greater yellowlegs, osprey, indigo bunting, Forster’s tern, Canada goose, osprey, great egret, snowy egret, and marsh wren.
