I went on a field trip with the Sussex Bird Club and we covered two of the forest tracts. The first tract was the Headquarters Tract. An eastern phoebe was nesting under the eaves of the Headquarters building. Other birds we identified here included Canada goose (with one chick), scarlet tanager, summer tanager, brown-headed cowbird, ovenbird, black-and-white warbler, northern parula, yellow-rumped warbler, chimney swift, pileated woodpecker, prothonotary warbler, blue grosbeak, worm-eating warbler, white-eyed vireo, great-crested flycatcher, double-crested cormorant (flock), wood thrush, and laughing gull. We drove to the Jester Tract next where we birded only in the parking lot area and along the stream by the bridge. Birds we identified here included barn swallow, summer tanager, wood thrush, ovenbird, yellow-throated vireo, bald eagle, chipping sparrow, blue-gray gnatcatcher, red-bellied woodpecker, and brown-headed cowbird.
