Birding at Prime Hook NWR: Featuring a Red-Headed Woodpecker (9/21/24)

We went through four areas of the refuge today. Birds near the Visitor’s Center included Carolina wren, belted kingfisher, Carolina chickadee, and American robin. We picked up 19 birds along the Dike Trail including eastern bluebird, red-bellied woodpecker, great egret, American black duck (flock of 3), belted kingfisher, Forster’s tern, northern flicker, common yellowthroat, double-crested cormorant, laughing gull, great blue heron, greater yellowlegs, and blue jay. Despite its low water levels due to this summer’s drought, Fleetwood Pond was a good place to stop. We identified 18 species there including bald eagle, little blue heron (imm.), Canada goose, red-headed woodpecker, pileated woodpecker, white ibis (imm.), royal tern, belted kingfisher, snowy egret, great egret, great blue heron, osprey, and gray catbird. We walked along Pine Grove Trail for our last stip. Birds we identified along this trail included pileated woodpecker, pine warbler, blue jay, great egret, great blue heron, American robin, American crow, and tufted titmouse.
