Birding at Cape Henlopen State Park: Featuring an American Oystercatcher (7/14/24)

Our first stop was at the beach near The Point. The tide was low so we saw several birds walking on the sandbars and swimming nearby. The special bird we saw here was a roseate tern mingled in with royal terns and laughing gulls. Other birds seen here included black scoter, piping plover (1), American oystercatcher, osprey, bald eagle, great blue heron, brown pelican, common tern, red-throated loon, common loon, spotted sandpiper, herring gull, least tern, willet, and red-winged blackbird. Our second stop was the Seaside Nature Trail, taking the loop to the beach and back around. Some of the birds we identified along this trail were Forster’s tern, osprey (including a nesting pair with two juveniles on a piling at the end of the fishing pier), purple martin, Carolina chickadee, wild turkey, American oystercatcher, brown pelican (18 in one group), common loon, downy woodpecker, and turkey vulture.
