Birding at Prime Hook NWR – Featuring Canada Geese (4/14/23)

We went on a field trip with the Sussex Bird Club and covered four areas of the refuge. Birds identified from the Visitor’s Center included common grackle, purple martin, killdeer, and field sparrow. Some of the birds we saw along the Dike Trail were snowy egret, chipping sparrow, eastern towhee, osprey, Savannah sparrow, Canada goose, greater yellowlegs, red-winged blackbird, blue-gray gnatcatcher, dunlin, greater yellowlegs, lesser yellowlegs, tree swallow, mallard (pair), and northern cardinal. Birds we saw along the Boardwalk Trail included green-winged teal (pair), dunlin, bald eagle (2 imms.), red-bellied woodpecker, osprey, greater yellowlegs, and chipping sparrow. My small group went to the end of Foord’s Landing Road where, among other birds, we identified white-throated sparrow, brown-headed cowbird, common yellowthroat, palm warbler, Carolina wren, and tufted titmouse.
