We went to three areas of the park. We started at The Point on the bay side and stayed there. Birds we saw there included yellow-rumped warbler, bufflehead, red-breasted merganser, surf scoter, common loon, and lesser black-backed gull. We walked to the beach side of The Point next and only identified red-throated loon, great black-backed gull, and surf scoter. Next, we took part of the Seaside Nature Trail to the primitive youth camps and only saw red-breasted nuthatch, Carolina chickadee, tufted titmouse, dark-eyed junco, and two black vultures on the tower. Our last stop was Herring Point by the benches overlooking the ocean. We were fortunate to find a rare lark sparrow that has been reported here for the past several days. We followed it for 20 minutes. It spent most of its time on the other side of the fence that separates the overlook from the old Battery Herring building. The bird was walking in the grass and picking out seeds. We also saw a couple of large rafts of snow geese in the ocean. I estimate that the larger raft that at least 1,000 birds in it.
