Birding at Cape Henlopen State Park: Featuring Brown Pelicans (9/2/22)

Our first stop was at The Point beach below the parking lot. The tide was fairly low and we saw many birds on the sandbars and in the shallow water. We estimated seeing about 50 brown pelicans. We saw two American oystercatchers. One had the same bands as the one I saw last year here on 8/31/21 so it was the same bird. We also saw royal, common, and Caspian terns. Some other birds we saw included osprey, blue grosbeak, great blue heron, herring gull, and laughing gull. Our second stop was along the north side of Gordon’s Pond Trail. Birds seen here included tricolored heron, great blue heron, little blue heron, green heron, peregrine falcon, Forster’s tern, semipalmated plover, great egret, and eastern kingbird.
