Birding at Prime Hook NWR: Featuring a Blue Grosbeak (5/13/21)

The morning started with walks around the Visitor’s Center and the Photographer’s Blind Trail. The Photographer’s Blind Trail was made more accessible since the last time we tried it which was at least a few years ago. Now we made it part of our regular trails in the park since there are good views of the nearby pool. In these two areas, we identified 27 species including a male/female pair of wild turkeys crossing the Entrance Road before the parking lot. Other species seen included house finch, red-winged blackbird, common yellowthroat, black vulture, one adult bald eagle, eastern kingbird, American goldfinch, and blue grosbeak. The Dike Trail yielded 32 species including male/female orchard oriole pair, Carolina wren, mallard, yellow warbler, dunlin, osprey, black-bellied plover, black skimmer, Forster’s tern, spotted sandpiper, and American redstart. The Boardwalk Trail produced 21 species including common yellowthroat, one adult bald eagle, house wren, greater yellowlegs, turkey vulture, one male orchard oriole, and northern mockingbird.
