Birding at Prime Hook NWR: Featuring a Peregrine Falcon (10/1/20)

We covered four areas of the refuge from the morning until early afternoon. Around the Visitor’s Center were Carolina chickadee, turkey vulture, and blue jay. The Dike Trail was excellent and we identified 39 species there including cedar waxwing, osprey, pileated woodpecker, American avocet, great egret, semipalmated plover, a peregrine falcon flying overhead, blue grosbeak, blue-winged and green-winged teal, northern harrier, and Caspian tern. Birds we saw along the Boardwalk Trail included one adult bald eagle, black vulture, Forster’s tern, gray catbird, great blue heron, and yellow-billed cuckoo. The last trail was a loop from the Blue Goose Trail to Foord’s Landing Road to the Entrance Road and back to the Visitor’s Center. Some birds we identified along this loop were red-bellied and hairy woodpeckers, Carolina chickadee, northern flicker, laughing gull, and tufted titmouse.
